Handmade with love, and a touch of magic at Oddfellows Dispensary in Arrowtown, Magic Balm uses a third generation recipe and only natural ingredients to protect your skin from harsh environments and the wear and tear of day-to-day life. The local success of this multi purpose balm has led to the establishment of Oddfellows Dispensary in 2001.
Magic balm was created during World War II by famous actress Angela Wall with the help of an admiring chemist. Jean Condon, the mother of Sam Gent (founder of Oddfellows Dispensary) fell in love with the recipe during her days as a famous model in London during the 1960's and 1970's. Through out the years she sold the product and eventually passed on the recipe to her daughter Sam. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Sam began modeling and soon after become qualified as a beauty therapist at the young age of 16. Sam started hand making Magic Balm, while living above her mothers salon in London, carry on the family practice.
After meeting husband David Gent in London, the bass player for the Exponents, the two decided to moved back to his home country of New Zealand. Sam, not straying from her passion, eventually opened Oddfellows Beauty Lodge. Inspired by the natural beauty of Arrowtown, in conjunction with the challenging climate, Sam decided to bring the age-old recipe back to life and Oddfellows Dispensary was founded. Keeping the family tradition alive, Magic balm is now being handmade by son Tane Gent. With humble beginnings, Magic balm is now available in her salons, sold online, and is still being loved by the local community.
